CHAPTER SIX

Jorge arrived to take Leo home on Sunday at noon. His brief escape to his sister’s place was just what Leo needed to recover and get his priorities straight. When he reached his house, he strolled across the pathway in the middle of his lawn and noted with dissatisfaction how the grass had grown unruly in his absence. He would have to mow it later, or better yet, pay Kenny – the teenage boy next door – to do it.

Leo’s eyes lingered on the house next to his. He remembered the conversation with Jorge about Riley on the way back. He told Leo that Riley living close to him was not good for his mental health, but Leo laughed it off.

“Psh, mental health? Do you think my mental health will suddenly fall apart because one girl said ‘no’ to me?” he asked incredulously.

“I know you, Leo. You can’t handle rejections; you obsess over them. I also know you have not loved anyone like you love Riley now,” Jorge replied, his eyes glued to the road.

“Your point exactly?”

“When we put together the fact that you don’t do well with rejections and that the person who rejected you lives next door and is the love of your naturally loveless life, this is a recipe for a freaking disaster!” Jorge exclaimed.

“Okay, first of all,” Leo said, facing his friend, “I will have you know that my life is not loveless. I have fallen in love a couple of times before.”

“Oh, yeah? Tell me one time that you wanted to be with a girl. And I don’t mean wanting to possess her. I mean, you wanted to be her boyfriend. Tell me, Leo, go on,” Jorge taunted him.

“Uhm, well, there was, uh… what was her name from high school?”

“Aw, shucks! You don’t even remember her name,” Jorge commented mockingly.

“The girl with the beautiful green eyes,” Leo said.

“Emerald,” he supplied. “Technically, she asked you out – you only had to say yes. That’s not the same, and you know it.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Leo argued. “Give me some credit, Jorge. I’m really over Riley.”

“I’ll be here when you need to cry,” Jorge teased.

“Not in your life,” Leo uttered as they made their way out of the car.

Leo ruminated over his conversation with Jorge as he stood alone in his empty house. It was true that he loved Riley, but she had made her position clear, and he would be damned if he beat himself up over it. Leo made his way upstairs towards his bedroom. As he opened the door, though, memories of his argument with Riley haunted him.

You shouldn’t have asked…

Shut up! Leo screamed at himself mentally.

Leo spent a lot of time cleaning his home. After some deliberation, he mowed the lawn himself. There was something about Leo and plants. He did not know when it started or why, but he always did it with hope whenever he planted seeds. He nurtured the plant to live, watering it with love and feeding it with nutrients not only from the manure bag but also from the bottom of his soul.
